Are you prepared for severe weather?

4/8/2022 (Permalink)

In the Ozarks severe weather comes in many forms; in the spring it mostly comes in the form of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flooding.  While storms vary it’s important to be prepared for any of these forms of severe weather.  It’s a good idea to have some basic supplies and some preparation done ahead of time. Make sure everyone in your home knows the designated place to shelter. Have a plan to get out of the house in case of emergency, make sure each family members know the best way to get out of the home. Have a designated place to meet when it is safe to go outside.

Create an emergency kit.

  1. Flashlights and batteries.
  2. Emergency Radio or NOAA weather radio
  3. Personal Sanitation products
  4. First Aid kit
  5. Plastic Tarps
  6. Gloves and Masks
  7. Extra clothing and blanket
  8. Tools to shut off utilities
  9. Battery pack chargers for your cell phones.

10.You should have an emergency supply of food.  Enough food for each family for at least 3 days and one gallon of water per day per family member.

Before a storm hits take some time to secure loose items around the house that can fly away.  Items like trash cans, lawn furniture, grills, and flowerpots.  If you have a generator, check to make sure it is in good working order. Hopefully you never need to access these items but if you ever do, it being prepared will be a huge help to your family.

Once the storm is over if your home has suffered storm damage, you may always reach out to SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson, we have the man power and resources you will need to get your home back to normal. Call us at 417-724-0084.

Second, we spray a solution called sheen and shield and wipe or use a soft dog brush to brush the fur back in place, while also brushing the solution into the fur.  The third step we use lemon furniture polish (we prefer Pledge brand for this job), to wipe the horns and antlers and eyes.  This will help keep the dust off and help keep them shiny once they are back on your wall.  The fourth step is applying cedar oil.  Dab some cedar oil onto a lint free cloth and wipe once over all of the fur, this will help keep any and all bugs away from your mount and prolong the life of your taxidermy.

If you would like to try your hand at cleaning and preserving your own mounts, here are a few tips:

  • Always brush/wipe in the direction with the fur.
  • Only work on one mount at a time, finish the entire cleaning process before moving onto the next mount.
  • Never fully saturate the fur with any liquid, this will loosen the glue holding it all together.
  • Clean your taxidermy every six months to prolong the life and quality of your mount.
  • You can buy a taxidermy cleaning kit here - https://www.mckenziesp.com/TCK1-P16790.aspx

How to Determine If Water Damage is New or Old

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage is the most common form of property damage to your Springfield or Greene County home or business because of the many ways it can occur. Natural events like rainstorms and flooding may lead to water damage, but they can also happen with internal issues like burst pipes and sewage backups that let water flow into your residential or commercial property, damaging it in the process.

Sometimes, the damage can be hidden so you might not notice it right away. When you do, you may wonder how long ago the damage happened. As time passes, unaddressed water damage deteriorates and causes more harm. So knowing when an area has experienced water damage can give you an idea as to the extent of the damage as well as the urgency of having the damage restored.

If you come across water damage but aren’t sure when it happened, use the following tips to determine whether it’s new or old.

Touch the Affected Area

New water damage will still be wet, but the affected material will still be firm, not soft. Older water damage will create soft, mushy spots due to the amount of time the material has had to absorb the moisture.

For example, drywall that’s been affected by new water damage will be damp but still stable. It will not have lost its structural integrity yet because the water hasn’t had time to significantly harm it. Drywall with older water damage, however, will have a softer texture, since enough time has passed for it to absorb water and harm the drywall. To help you figure out how long drywall has been wet, know that standing water can wick up drywall at a rate of one inch per hour for the first 24 hours.

Look for Rings

Staining and discoloration are among common signs of water damage. More specifically, rings may develop on softer materials, such as drywall, when they’ve been periodically harmed by water.

If you see a darker spot with no rings around it, this shows that the water damage is new. Older, sporadic water damage (for example, a slow pipe leak) will have rings around it, and like a tree, more rings show age. Different shades and colors of rings tell you that the area has been soaked, dried, soaked, dried, etc.

Search for Mold Growth

Water damage and mold growth go hand in hand because water damage creates the ideal conditions for mold spores to grow and form colonies.

Mold needs moisture and an organic food source to grow. Once mold spores encounter both, this triggers mold growth. Mold damages materials it grows on, eating away at the surfaces. Mold damage can get so bad that it affects a building’s structural integrity.

So, if you find mold growing in your Greene County home or business, there’s a good chance water damage has occurred somewhere in the structure. Mold will develop within 24-48 hours of water exposure and will keep growing until the source of moisture is eliminated.

Professional Water Damage Restoration Services

If you discover your property has sustained water damage — whether old or new, large or small — address the situation as soon as possible! Water damage only worsens with time, and mold growth soon follows. With old water damage, the danger exists that affected materials could become so unstable that they collapse.

So call the professionals at SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson promptly. The sooner you get help, the less damage there will be to deal with – along with less cost.

After removing any excess water and moisture from your property, we will thoroughly dry out the affected areas and materials. From there, we’ll restore the damage and clean the space. If mold has grown as a result, then we can provide mold remediation services as well. With professional help, your property will be safe, clean, and restored to its former condition.

Helpful Tips for Preventing Water Damage in your Branson Vacation Home

3/25/2022 (Permalink)

Vacation or seasonal homes are at a greater risk of water damage due to prolonged periods of in-occupancy. Water is by far the top damage to homes each year, one in every 55 homes has a water damage each year. Many times, the water in a condo or vacation home goes undetected therefore the amount of water damage in a secondary home can be astronomical compared to your primary home.

With proper planning you can reduce your risk of experiencing a water damage.  Here are a few tips to protect your home while you’re away.

  1. During winter months set your thermostat at no less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Hire someone to periodically look in on your property and inspect.
  3. If your home is unoccupied for an extended time, consider shutting off the water, if it is in the winter drain and winterize your pipes.
  4. Install a wireless programmable thermostat that you can monitor with your smart phone.
  5. Inspect and maintain your sump pump.
  6. Inspect and clean your gutters and downspouts.
  7. Locate your homes main water shut off valve and turn it off when you’re away for extended periods.

Commercial Ice Blasting Cleaning

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

Ice Blasting soot from a ceiling in a boom lift For more information about dry ice blasting or commercial cleaning services please contact SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson at 417-724-0084.

The soot left from fire damage can leave stains and nasty odors.  One way we restore fire damaged materials is with a media blasting process using dry ice or sand.  Media blasting helps remove soot and saves money, instead of replacing costly materials. Our team recently used dry ice blasting to clean soot from a commercial building.

Dry Ice Blasting is an environmentally responsible cleaning and surface preparation technique.  Dry ice blasting uses solid carbon dioxide (Co2) pellets or Microparticles which are blasted at supersonic speeds and sublimate or vaporize on impact lifting dirt and contaminants off the underlying surface. Dry Ice cleaning is non-abrasive, non-conductive, non-toxic and non-flammable.

This commercial facility had a fire indoors and is utilizing our dry ice media blasting services, after setting up a containment area our team is dry ice blasting or dry ice cleaning the facility.  One of the reasons dry ice cleaning is so popular is there is no secondary waste there is no water or moisture to cause secondary damage. For more information about dry ice blasting or commercial cleaning services please contact SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson at 417-724-0084.

Cooking up Kitchen Safety

3/6/2022 (Permalink)

Ranges and cooktops are the most involved appliances in home fire cooking, they account for about 48 percent of all fires, ovens for 16 percent.

The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking, over 90 percent of cooking fires are caused by this.   Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.  If you must leave for some reason turn off the stove. Check your food regularly, set yourself a reminder if you have something on the stove or in the oven. Stay alert, don’t cook if you are drowsy or sleepy. Keep flammable items away from your heat source, items such as oven mitts, potholders, wooden utensil, packaging and bags, curtains, and towels.  Clean up any spills or grease as soon as they happen, and the stovetop is cool.   Don’t wear loose clothing such as long sleeves and scarves, they can easily catch fire. Install smoke alarms in the kitchen, outside each sleeping area, inside each bedroom, and on every level of your home (including the basement).

If a cooking fire does break out, the NFPA offers this advice:

  • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you're cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  • Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen. Contact your local fire department to take training on the proper use of extinguishers.
  • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off.

How to prevent Basement Floods

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

furniture in a flooded basement Call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson today at (417) 724-0084 if you have a flooded basement.

Spring rains can bring out the worst in flawed grading and foundations, this could leave you with a mess in your home basement. With spring just around the corner, it’s a great time to assess your property before things go wrong. There are some measures you can take now to prevent flooding.

Keep your rain gutters clean and debris free, and make sure they’re pointed away from the foundation of your home.  You want to drain your storm water at least three feet away from your home, so consider running extension or troughs.

Periodically inspect the exterior foundation of your basement’s walls and floors.  Use epoxy to fill any foundation cracks and apply masonry sellers indoors. You might need to call a professional for more serious issues.

During a heavy rain, check around your yard to see where any water may be pooling.  If it is pooling around or toward your homes foundation you will need to call an expert to grade your yard properly.

Make sure your basement is equipped with sump pump with an automatic trigger to sense water in your basement.  This will protect your basement even when you are not home. We recommend that you check your sump pump periodically to make sure it is functioning properly, free of debris and connected to a power source.

Follow these heating safety tips to help keep your home safe this winter.

  • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from your fireplace or wood stove.
  • Put the fire out before you go to sleep or leave your home.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned each year by a professional.
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace or wood stove.
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid. Place the container outside at least 10 feet from your home.
  • Keep glass or metal screen in front of your fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out.
  • Make sure your wood stove has been tested by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Keep the doors of your wood stove closed unless loading and stoking the live fire.

Winter Weather in the Ozarks

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Freezing water coming out of a brick wall. A broken pipe causes water to run outside of the brick in an apartment building.

Living in the harsh Missouri Ozarks weather can have it challenges.  Severe weather comes in many forms in our area and one of them is winter storms.  We have learned you can never be too prepared for the weather that might come your way living in Springfield.

There are some simple steps you can do to prepare your home for winger in the Ozarks.  Keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping.  Install and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and don’t forget to check and replace your batteries twice a year. It’s a good idea to gather supplies in case you need to stay home a few days without power, batteries for flashlights and radio and don’t forget to have extra supplies on hand for your pets.  We like to have a plan in place for a source of alternate heating such as a generator.

A few tips to keep pipes from freezing are Keeping your garage door closed at all times, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage. Open Kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors where there are water lines, this will allow the warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if the pipes are on an outer wall. Let water drip from a faucet, running water at a trickle will help prevent the pipes from freezing.

Sometimes even with all the planning in place pipes freeze and once the temperatures warm up you can be left with a mess.  If this happens you can always call SERVPRO of Springfield/Greene County to come and assess the situation. We are dedicated to responding immediately when you contact us.  A fast response lessens the damage and limits further damage and reduces cost.

Risks After Flood

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Picking up the pieces of your home after a flood can be overwhelming.  You want to get back into your home as quickly and safely as possible but there are some things you need to know to keep yourself and your family safe.

Only return home when authorities say it is safe. Wear heavy gloves and protective clothing and appropriate footwear such as heavy work boots during cleanup, it is also a good idea to wear appropriate face coverings such as mask to protect you from mold and other possible contaminants. If you have asthma or any other lung condition you should not enter buildings where mold growth can be seen or smelled.

Avoid wading in floodwater only return when the water has receded. Flood water can be contaminated and very dangerous.  Downed or underground power lines can electrically charge the water. There could be snakes and other animals in your house.

SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson is highly trained in water damage restoration including basement and crawlspace flooding. We have the experience, expertise, and equipment to remove the water and dry your basement properly.  Our water removal and drying process emphasizes monitoring and documentation to validate your property is dry.

Tips for Making Your Branson Home Spring Clean!

4/2/2021 (Permalink)

One of the great pleasures of this time of year is throwing open the windows after a cold Missouri winter and letting in warm, fresh spring air. More than likely, that first whiff of spring is probably the reason why “spring cleaning” has become part of our consciousness. We want the inside of our home looking and smelling fresh too!

Diving in and doing some deep cleaning can make a significant difference when it comes to the overall look and feel of your home. Besides regular vacuuming, dusting and mopping, let’s discuss several other ways to brighten up your home and improve its air quality.

Concentrate on These Areas

Clean windows and screens. Dirty windows not only let in less light, but they show up dirt easier than most any other area of your home. With newer tilt-in windows, this isn’t the chore it used to be. If you have older second story windows that require ladders to reach them, either have professionals handle it or at least make sure you have a spotter on the ground. While you’re at it, clean dust and debris from your screens by brushing them with a scrap of carpeting.

Get the air ducts cleaned. There are numerous benefits to doing this. Allergies, which usually increase in the spring, can be even worse if there’s also excess dust and dirt particles floating around your home. Considering that the average American spends 90% of their time indoors, improving indoor air quality is vital. SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson can check if yours need cleaning.

Clean blinds and drapes. These can accumulate a ton of dust. For blinds, use a microfiber blind brush that will do the job quickly and efficiently. For curtains, remove them from their rod/hooks and throw them in the dryer with a slightly damp towel. Turn your dryer on for about 20 minutes set on the “air fluff” (no heat) setting. The damp towel will help pull off any dust or fur and the tumbling action will finish the job. As soon as they’re done, hang them back up right away.

Have your carpets professionally cleaned. Between a pandemic that’s kept us all inside to a long, wet, messy southwest Missouri winter, your carpets have taken a beating. Rental carpet cleaners don’t pre-treat pesky spots or rinse your carpets with water afterward. A systematic cleaning with high powered equipment will not only ensure cleaner carpets but will also extend their life.

Clean the washing machine. Although you’d think it would clean itself, over time detergent residue, bacteria, and dirt can build up in a washing machine, leading to musty smells and not-so-clean laundry. To clean it, fill the drum with a ½ cup of baking soda and a quart of vinegar, then run a wash cycle. (Or use tablets made for cleaning washers.) Use the hottest water setting, largest load size, and the longest wash cycle. Meanwhile, between loads, always keep the lid open to allow it to dry out completely inside, reducing the chances of mildew growth.

Clean the kitchen trash can. Sure, you use plastic trash bags, so your trash can should be clean, right? Unfortunately, even after taking out the garbage, foul smells can still linger in your trash bin. Those odors have a way of drifting throughout your home. Baking soda can work wonders at preventing those smells. Sprinkle some in the bottom of a trash can or directly into the trash to help absorb stinky odors. As a bonus, baking soda is great for scrubbing out your trash can to remove odors that may have seeped into it.

Declutter Your Home

A home with less clutter is a cleaner home. Not only does it look neater, but there’s also less surface areas for dust and dirt to collect on. One way to straighten up is by putting items back where they belong. (For instance, clothes don’t belong in the kitchen and dishes don’t belong in the bathroom.)

Sometimes, decluttering means getting rid of stuff. This isn’t always easy to do. We get attached to our possessions. So, chucking them takes self-honesty and will power. If you haven’t used (much less touched) an item in over six months, do you really need it? If not and it has some value, donate it. Doing so is not only tax deductible, but it also helps others and makes you feel good about yourself. And many charitable organizations that had to close down last year are now accepting donations again.

Help is Nearby

Between work, running countless errands and taking care of kids, not all homeowners have time to be cleaning the entire house. And if someone lives alone, it can be too big a job for one person to handle, especially if that person is elderly, infirm or handicapped.

If you’re in any of those situations, you’re not alone. The experts of SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson are always available to help around the house. Whether you need a certain area of your Georgia home cleaned or the entire property deep cleaned, count on our professionals to get the job done quickly and efficiently with our professional residential cleaning services. Then sit back, take a deep breath, and enjoy your spring cleaned home!

Protecting your Branson Condo from Water Damage

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

From burst pipes to appliance leaks, to hot water heater and HVAC problems water damage is the number one cause of loss among condominium owners.

Many of the scenarios we see for water damages in the Branson area are out of a condo owner’s control—like a toilet overflow from an upstairs neighboring unit that allows water to leak through the ceiling to the condo below, most water damages could be prevented by taking preventative measures.

Appliance Malfunction

Appliances with pipes or water lines such as refrigerators, ice makers, dish washers, toilet and washing machines may malfunction and can quickly cause significant damage. Installing a leak detection sensor or an automatic water shut off device would be a good idea for properties such as vacation homes or condos that are unoccupied for extended periods of time. A simple drain pan under your washing machine can help prevent machine overflow or water line hose failures.

Frozen and Burst Pipes

Your condo is at risk for frozen or burst pipes when temperatures drop, set your heat at a minimum of 65 when you are away and it would be a good idea to have someone check in on your condo periodically.

Regardless of where the water comes from, be rest assured that the professionals at SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson tackle all water damage problems in your Branson condominium. We’ll dry you out, repair the damage and make it “Like it never even happened." We are available 24/7 365 days a year.  Contact us at 417-724-0084.

The Problem with Freezing Pipes

2/25/2021 (Permalink)

Pictured is a red brick wall with windows and water from a burst pipe has leaked out of the structure and frozen This building suffered a water damage from burst pipes, the water leaked out of the structure and refroze creating the frozen icicles you see.

Water is very unique in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts pressure on whatever is containing it, which includes pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.  Pipes that are most at risk are exposed to cold like your outdoor spigot for your water hose, water irrigation lines, unheated areas of your home like crawlspaces, basements and garages and attics.

Here are some ways to protect your pipes from freezing:

  • Drain the water from your irrigation and pool systems. We suggest having a professional complete this.
  • Unscrew and remove the hoses that you use outdoors.
  • If you have a crawlspace close your crawlspace vents during winter and especially during freezing temperatures. You may even want to insulate around the crawlspace vents. Adding insulation to attics, basement and crawlspaces is also a good idea and will help maintain temperatures in these areas.

Some tips to thaw your frozen pipes:

  • When you turn your faucet on and there is no water or only a trickle, you should suspect a frozen pipe, especially if the pipe is along an exterior wall or around your foundation, sometimes even under a cabinet that is alongside an exterior wall.
  • Keep the faucet turned to the on position. As the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt any ice that has formed inside of the pipe.
  • Attempt to thaw the pipe by applying heat to the section that you think may be frozen, you can use a hair dryer, a space heater or even a heating pad wrapped around the pipe.  Do not use items like a propane or kerosene heater, any open flame.
  • If you are unable to locate the frozen area or thaw the pipe then you need to call a licensed plumber.

In our experience many times if one pipe is frozen there are likely others so check the other areas in the home that are most vulnerable. Also unfortunately many times pipes will burst at night temperatures are the coldest, that is also when you are asleep and you might not be aware of the water problem until many hours later.  Hopefully if you follow these tips you will ensure water damage from a burst pipe will not happen to you but if it does, call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson anytime and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson is excited to announce that we recently added a Flood House training center to our Employee Training Program.  A Flood House is a real life Water and Mold Damage Scenario training tool that is used to train technicians and team members on correct restoration methods. To give you an idea how it works, the flood house is well... flooded.  You can imagine, wet carpet, subfloor, wood floors, sheetrock, furniture and cabinetry. Our crews are then given hands on training using the latest IICRC S500 industry standards. We can create many different scenarios that our team members will face once they are in the field.  They will learn the proper use of many different tools, such as: extraction tools, dehumidifiers, air movers, moisture meters. We feel like this training is the most effective hands on training and will be a place where our team members can dedicate the time that is needed to learn the proper restoration techniques. The flood house is located inside one of our warehouse facilities in southwest Missouri.

At SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson it is important to us that our staff is highly trained in property damage restoration.  Our training program includes IICRC, Employee Certification Training, Initial Franchise training, e- learnings and Continuing Education Training.

Raw Sewage Cleanup – Why Only Professionals Should Handle It

10/14/2019 (Permalink)

Clean Bathroom with sink, mirror and a toilet If you’ve experienced a sewage backup, take action immediately! Have the number of SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson handy at all times.

Whether you’ve smelled it while driving by a spill or you’ve had it backed up in your home or business, the stomach-churning odor of raw sewage is hard to forget. Unfortunately, the terrible smell isn’t the worst of it.

What is raw sewage?

Raw sewage is waste that hasn’t been cleaned and treated and originates from residential, institutional, or business buildings. It isn’t just liquid; it can also contain toilet paper, feminine sanitary products, and other human wastes. It’s also known as black water, which is highly contaminated and can lead to illness, disease, and infection.

What are the health risks?

Raw sewage is a combination of nasty stuff. It’s the ideal breeding ground for almost every kind of bacteria, virus and microorganism. Raw sewage contains an almost endless list of very harmful pathogens and exposure to them will make you violently ill or even kill you.

What protective actions do professionals take when dealing with raw sewage?

It’s critical that raw sewage is kept from coming into contact with skin, especially cuts, sores and any mucus membrane associated with the eyes, ears and nose. That means the pros at SERVPRO of Nixa  / Branson cover up completely in PPE (personal protective equipment) which includes full body suits, full face respirators, gloves, rubber boots, etc. We also keep a ready stock of respirator and sanitizer wipes, as well as access to an eye wash station and a change of clothes.

Who should I contact?

If you’ve experienced a sewage backup, take action immediately! Have the number of SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson handy at all times. Water damage restoration is often needed along with sewage cleanup since the dampness can get into floors and walls, and may cause serious threats to your building’s foundation.

What are some helpful tips?

Keep pets, children, and the elderly away from the contaminated area as they’re usually more susceptible to germs and bacteria. Thoroughly wash any salvageable items immediately. Although it’s not always possible to prevent raw sewage backups, you can reduce the chances of one occurring by having your drain lines inspected at least twice a year. Also, be sure to repair slow drains quickly, don’t pour grease down the drain and have your pipes flushed regularly.

What to Know Before Buying a Fire Damaged Home

10/9/2019 (Permalink)

Remains of a fire charred kitchen Buying a fire damaged home? Call SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson.

With home prices skyrocketing, people are willing to do almost anything to get a good deal, including buying a house that has had a fire. That could be a good investment because they cost less and may even be negotiated to a lower price. But the following are things you need to know before buying a fire damage home.

How Deep Was the Damage?

How much damage a house has suffered can determine whether it’s worth purchasing and/or flipping. If the damage was only cosmetic where just the carpet and walls were scorched, that wouldn’t be too big of a deal. But if the damage is deeper and affects the subfloors, joists, plumbing or the HVAC, then you’re talking serious money and it might not be worth your time or effort.

How Long Since the Fire?

Do you know how long it’s been since the fire occurred? If the house has sat for a while needing fire damage cleanup without any repairs done on it, then you might want to pass. The longer fire damage is allowed to sit, the more deterioration will take place. Soot and ash are acidic and can cause irreversible property damage if not treated immediately. Soot can cause the metal in plumbing fixtures, lights, etc., to pit or corrode. Glass in windows and mirrors can be etched by soot residue, making them look cloudy and soiled. Plastics, appliances, vinyl windows and fabrics can be permanently discolored by soot residue.

Fire damage and water damage are almost always linked because firefighters extinguish flames with water. And many times, a fire will open a house up to the elements. If that water isn’t immediately removed or dried up, it can cause severe problems with mold and may weaken the foundation. And since water is a solvent, it will slowly dissolve, break apart and destroy most of the materials in a home if not dealt with promptly. These problems must be handled by restoration professionals that have the needed equipment.

What About Hidden Damage?

It can be difficult to see if a home has structural damage from a fire when you’re doing a walkthrough. That’s why you should not only get a home inspected before buying, but you should also contact SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson to do a walk through and consultation. If you have a better idea of how much structural damage exists and a rough estimate of what it will cost, you’ll be able to negotiate a deal to ensure a higher return on your investment.

Home shows on TV make flipping a house look fun, quick, and profitable. But the true reality is that those with fire and water damage can be a lot of work if you don’t know what you’re doing. The best way to buy a house with fire damage is to have SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson on your team to do the work needed to once again make it a livable home.

When is Water Damage Not Water Damage?

8/20/2019 (Permalink)

If your home has suffered a water damage please contact SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson at 417-724-0084.

When is water damage not water damage? When your insurance company gets involved! You see, although losses caused by water can be identical no matter the source of the water, insurance companies differentiate between what they consider “water damage”, “flood damage” and “sewer backup”. So, to make sure ALL your assets are totally covered, you’ll need to have coverage for all types of claims.

Flood Insurance

Although it seems counterintuitive, the standard homeowner’s insurance policy does not cover damage caused by floods. You’ll have to purchase a separate policy for that. To be labeled a flood, insurance companies follow the legal definition set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that it’s a "general and temporary condition where two or more acres of normally dry land or two or more properties are inundated by water or mudflow." Those conditions are caused by such things as overflowing rivers, heavy rains, overflow of tidal waters, and mud slides.

Water Damage Insurance

The good news is that in many home insurance policies, water damage is part of your standard policy. The main distinction from flood insurance is that water damage occurs before the water hits the ground. (An easy mnemonic would be, “Flood damage rises, water damage falls.”) Some examples of such a claim would be:

  • Water damage resulting from the extinguishing of a fire
  • Soaked floors following a storm that broke windows
  • A leaking appliance
  • Accidental cracking, burning, or bulging of a steam, heat or AC system
  • Frozen pipes that have burst
  • A leaking roof

Sewer or Water Backup Insurance

These problems are possible caveats to what’s considered flood or water damage. Most homeowners’ policies will not cover damage caused by a sewer or water backup (e.g., from a leaking in-ground swimming pool, koi pond or other subsurface water feature on your property). You’ll need to purchase separate insurance coverage as an add-on to your homeowner’s policy to be covered. Their payout limits usually vary between $5,000 and $25,000.

Please note: Even if the water came from beyond your property, such as a pipe maintained by the city, your insurer still won’t cover it unless you purchase the special coverage outlined above.

If you have questions about any of this, contact your insurance agent. If your home is located on a flood plain, your agent will likely recommend that you purchase additional flood insurance to reduce your financial risk.

But regardless of where the water came from, be rest assured that the professionals at SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson tackle all water damage problems. We’ll dry you out, repair the damage and make it “Like it never even happened."

We recently completed an extensive mold remediation in a kitchen in a Southwest Missouri home.  The mold was caused simply by a leaky faucet.  The photo shown is during the cleaning process.   SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson's professionally certified crews use containment while cleaning to keep the mold spores from spreading through out the home.  This is done by using air scrubbers to capture the spores in the work area and pulling the air outside while work is being performed.  Due to the amount of mold the kitchen had to be completely demoed down to the stud framing.  This allows us to dry the structure and remove, clean and disinfect the mold. This demonstrates how something as simple as a leaky faucet can cause damage to your home.

Fire: Dangers in the Aftermath

3/20/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damaged Garage from a recent residential fire SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson completed

There’s been a fire at your home or business. Once the firemen leave, your first inclination may be to go inside the structure to see what you can salvage and start the cleaning process. But cleaning up after a fire is much more complicated than regular cleaning. It’s also very dangerous. Because once the last flame has been snuffed out, the dangers from a fire continue.

Soot Hazards

Since fire destroys all materials, the soot that covers everything you touch and that you kick up in the air is full of toxic substances. That’s why the highly trained professionals at SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson wear heavy duty personal protection equipment (PPE) on fire mitigation jobs until all the soot is removed. Here are some of the poisons found in the soot and ashes of a building fire:

  • Mesothelioma (cancer) causing asbestos fibers from building materials
  • Carbon materials can produce carbon monoxide, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides
  • PVC can create hydrogen chloride, phosgene (used as a chemical weapon during World War I), dioxin, Refrigerant-40, bromomethane (a pesticide), etc.
  • Hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide (poisonous gasses)
  • Petroleum based items can produce formaldehyde, acrolein, furfural, cresols, and other harmful chemicals
  • Even wood smoke releases more than 100 chemicals also found in cigarette smoke

Removing the Odors

One of the main aftereffects of a fire are odors. These can be difficult to remove without professional know-how and equipment. For instance, did you know that several factors can impact the strength of fire odors? Some of these are:

  • Size - The bigger the fire, the more objects have burned, and thus there’s been more smoke.
  • Length -The longer a structure has been exposed to smoke, the more deeply odor has seeped into porous materials.
  • Space - When a fire occurs in a smaller room, the smoke odor becomes more intense and concentrated.
  • Stuff - Not all odors are equal. For instance, burning wood, plastic and protein, all emit different smells with varied consistency.

SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson has the knowledge and equipment to eliminate the diverse and pungent odors that occur after a fire. Besides the easily accessible areas, we also examine wall cavities, duct work, crawl spaces and plumbing chases to establish whether they also suffered any smoke or fire damage. We’ll ensure that they’re cleaned, repaired and that all traces of odor are removed.

So as tempting as it may be to rush back into your fire damaged home or business once the fire is out, play it safe and call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson first so that we can safely make it “Like it never even happened."

Frozen Pipes Cause Flood for Southwest Missouri Church

Air Movers drying walls of a church after a burst pipe in Southwest Missouri

During a recent cold snap a frozen pipe caused this southwest Missouri church to flood.  This picture shows a portion of the building during the drying process. The cove trim was removed to allow us to access the area behind the walls.   We utilized a large desiccant dehumidifier to dry the entire building.  The desiccant recycles the air inside, bringing warm dry air inside while sucking moist air outside.  SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson's efforts resulted in having 90% of the building dry within 3 days.

Water damage can strike your commercial property at any time. Water damage can sideline your business, regardless if the damage occurs from a major storm event or a broken water line. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity.

A Flood of Concerns for Branson Area

Call SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson for your storm and flooding cleanup

Spring will soon be upon us, along with spring rains. As needed as they are, sometimes those rains don’t let up for a while and Branson ends up flooded. When that happens, we may see images of people walking through flood waters. Many times, they have no choice as they’re trying to escape to higher ground. But sometimes we see pictures of kids, even adults, playing in floodwaters. There is something tempting about playing in water when it’s in places it’s usually never seen. But here are some serious reasons why you never want to walk (or play) in floodwaters:

  • Creature features – some of your playmates may include poisonous snakes, bugs, leeches, disease-carrying rodents and decaying animal carcasses.
  • Shock value – a live power line could give way (which is not unusual in disaster areas) and land in the water you’re standing in. No description necessary.
  • Junk in the funk – flood waters can carry and/or hide all sorts of debris that can harm you – broken glass, torn metal, splintered wood, etc.
  • The force is not with you – it only takes 6 inches of rapidly moving floodwaters to knock you off your feet and carry you to an uncertain fate.
  • Contamination abounds – many floods cause sewer overflows, releasing dangerous chemical waste and harmful microbes. These can make you very ill, especially if you swallow any or it comes in contact with your eyes, nose or open sores.
  • They suck – when flood waters cover storm drains or sink holes, powerful whirlpools can form that may not be visible from above. They can pull you under and won't let you go.

If you must walk in flood water (standing only – never go into moving water unless you’ve got a rope attached and you’re with a fireman/EMT/etc.), then take all precautions. Wear protective clothing and where your skin or clothing comes in contact with the water, wash as soon as possible. Also make sure you keep up with all vaccinations.

The dangers listed above can also enter your home during flooding. And even if the flooding comes from an inside source, some of these hazards still exist. So instead of trying to handle such a catastrophe yourself, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Nixa / Branson who are trained for such emergencies. We use powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property. Then we’ll dry, dehumidify, clean, repair and return your property to normal.

Does Your Branson Home Have A Mold Problem?

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

If You See Signs of Mold in your home, Call Us Today – 417-724-0084

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Don't Reach for the Bleach

2/7/2019 (Permalink)

Ten Reasons not to use Bleach when cleaning mold

Chlorine-based bleach has been around for a long, long, time. It was invented in Europe in the late 18th century, and many consider it the be-all and end-all solution to their cleaning needs. But in reality, it can do great harm.

Here are the Top Ten reasons why you don’t want to use bleach to clean:

  1. Chlorine lacks detergency – in other words, it contains no wetting agents that allow it to penetrate soils, so surfaces must be pre-cleaned before chlorine will effectively kill germs. This is a 2-step process that requires more time.
  1. Chlorine is very caustic to human tissue. It can produce irritation and burning on your skin and could cause blindness.
  1. Chlorine reacts with other chemicals to create toxic byproducts and gases. For instance, when bleach comes in contact with ammonia, it can form chlorine gas, causing cellular damage in nasal passageways and lungs. The accidental mixture of these two products in homes has resulted in death. It’s also incompatible with products that contain hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid (vinegar).
  1. It may harm your children. After using, bleach remains on surfaces and continues to emit fumes. Recent studies show that children who been exposed to bleach in their homes are more likely to suffer from respiratory illness. In addition, various studies have linked the use of bleach in a household to a higher prevalence of asthma and allergies.
  1. Using bleach can hurt your pets. Your cleaning products can stay on a pet’s paws or fur. Since cats and dogs often lick themselves, they may ingest harmful chemicals. Due to their tiny size, birds can become sick upon inhaling only a small amount of the fumes. Bleach poisoning in pets can result in vomiting, convulsions, and sometimes death.
  1. Bleach can kill mold, BUT it depends on the surface the mold is on. Mold grows on both porous and non-porous materials. When dealing with mold on non-porous materials such as shower tiles, tubs, vinyl window trims, counter tops, etc. you can use bleach to kill the mold and disinfect. But using bleach to remove mold from porous materials like drywall and wood can actually accelerate mold growth rather than killing it!                                                                                      When bleach is used on porous materials, the chlorine is left on the surface and only the water component of the bleach is absorbed into the material, aggravating the situation as this provides more moisture for the mold to feed on, where it may then produce allergens and irritants. If you have a mold infestation, call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson to professionally remove it.
  1. Chlorine is extremely corrosive to metal surfaces and can permanently discolor countertops. It can also damage floor finishes, requiring them to be stripped and recoated, which is an expensive process.
  1. Chlorine discolors fibers and colored surfaces. Carpets, upholstery and clothing are just a few of the materials that may be damaged.
  1. Chlorine bleach’s disinfectant power is rapidly inactivated by contact with organic matter, such as blood, saliva, tissue, urine, feces, dirt, etc. Chlorine is also weakened by sunlight.
  1. Diluted chlorine bleach quickly loses its effectiveness, is unstable and can lose its disinfectant qualities very rapidly compared to other, more stable disinfectants.

Some safer and effective alternatives to bleach are:

  • Baking soda and white vinegar – they’re non-toxic and non-corrosive. Use them to freshen fabrics, eliminate grease, and clean glass.
  • Rubbing alcohol – effectively cleans plastic surfaces of electronics
  • Hydrogen peroxide – it’s nontoxic and can be used to disinfect household surfaces. Unlike bleach, hydrogen peroxide is safe to use around food products.
  • Soap and warm water – the basics! It’ll clean just about anything in your home and won’t present any health risks. Scrubbing with antibacterial soap will kill bacteria just like harsher chemicals.

Although bleach products may be a bargain, you owe it to yourself, your family or coworkers to use a product that truly cleans, thoroughly disinfects and is safe to use.

Why Pipes Freeze and How to Stop it From Happening to You

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

The affects of water from freezing pipes.

About the only time you want to hear the sounds of snap, crackle and pop is from a fireplace or your breakfast cereal, but never from the water pipes in your home or business. And once one ruptures, it can release hundreds of gallons per hour, causing extensive water damage to your property. Unfortunately, SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson sees this happen all the time during the winter when pipes are allowed to freeze. But why do they break?

Water’s Weird Quality

Water reacts very differently from most other elements. When water cools, it contracts until it reaches approximately 40°F. After that, it expands slightly until it reaches the freezing point, when it then swells by about 9%. Since this is enough pressure to split open boulders, your pipes don’t stand a chance!

Recognize the Problem Areas

The pipes that are more likely to freeze are:

  • Those exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose spigots, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water pipes in unheated interior areas like basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets, especially those that aren’t insulated.
  • Pipes that run along outside walls that have little or no insulation.

Nip It in the Bud

Before cold weather sets in, follow these suggestions to protect your pipes from freezing:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines.
  • Close inside valves that supply outdoor spigots, then open the spigots to let any remaining water drain out. Keep outside valves open so that any water left in the pipe can expand without breaking it.
  • Add high R-value insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces.
  • Install "pipe sleeves" or wrap UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials onto exposed water pipes.
  • Keep garage doors closed if there’s a water supply line inside.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let warmer air circulate around the plumbing.
  • Once the temperature reaches 28°F outside, let water drip from both the cold and hot water faucets. This not only keeps water moving through the pipes but relieves built-up water pressure should they freeze.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature day and night. A slightly higher electric bill costs less than a repair job on a broken pipe and subsequent water damage.
  • If you’re a snowbird and will be gone for a while, leave the heat in your home set to no lower than 55°F.

Many times, a frozen pipe will burst in the middle of the night when it’s coldest. Unfortunately, that’s also the time you’re asleep and so you may not be aware of the problem until hours later, compounding the water damage and the cost to repair it. So do all you can to ensure that it doesn’t happen to you. But if it does, call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson any time of the day or night and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

Our Story

SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson is locally owned and operated and specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property.

In March of 1985 Harlin and LaJune Bryngelson relocated their family to Springfield, Missouri after the company Harlin worked for began restructuring.  Harlin and June had friends that had purchased a SERVPRO franchise in Northern Missouri and they quickly saw that this could be a good fit for them as well. The Bryngelsons officially opened their own SERVPRO franchise in Springfield in the spring of 1985.  Building a business from the ground up took sacrifice and hard work; working alongside of them were their children Donnae, Debbie, Daniel, David and son in law Brian Grimm.  Harlin and LaJune retired from SERVPRO in 1994 and Daniel, David and Brian took over ownership and operations and have since continued the legacy set forth by their parents. They also expanded their territory and added an additional franchise in Nixa / Branson in 2001, with additional office space added in Branson in 2018.

2 Critical Reasons Not to Delay Drying

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

This southwest Missouri home experienced extensive mold growth from an ongoing roof leak.

When flood damage strikes a property in Nixa, the results are usually far too serious for property owners to handle on their own. Professional restoration services like those provided by SERVPRO help to return a home back to the way it was before a flood. But many fear the costs and responsibilities associated with a full-scale restoration project. Unfortunately, few if any of the unpleasant consequences inherent in flood damage disappear without appropriate care and attention. To prevent long-term adverse effects from developing in your home or business, call for help immediately.

Here are two of the most serious problems that can develop when professional drying is delayed:

  1. Weakened Foundations

Long-term exposure to standing water and the additional moisture that’s produced during flood damage events in Nixa can cause permanent and expensive damage to the very foundation of your home. Even the solid materials that foundations are made of, whether masonry, concrete or stone, can soak up small amounts of water through the cracks and pores in their material. Unless these pockets of water are removed, they can create defects in the building foundation that eventually weaken the entire structure. In the winter, water trapped inside those cracks will expand as it freezes, resulting in very serious structural issues that will be incredibly expensive to fix.

Fast and thorough drying processes are the only way to protect your home against these threats. SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson has the specialty equipment that’s designed to remove all unwanted moisture.

  1. Mold Growth

Mold grows wherever there’s a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, around windows, or pipes, or where there’s been flooding. It can grow most anywhere, but especially where it finds food, such as on porous surfaces like paper, cardboard, wallboard and wood. Mold can also grow on many nonporous materials such as concrete and brick. And with the right temperature, moisture and food, mold will grow most anywhere. A rolling stone may gather no moss, but one sitting still sure can. Preventative treatments can help, but the only reliable solution to developing mold problems is rapid drying and dehumidification that SERVPRO offers.

Add to those two problems the fact that water, often called the universal solvent, can slowly dissolve, break apart and destroy most of the materials in your home or business and you can see why you need to call SERVPRO immediately should you experience a flood or water damage of any type.

Preventing Frozen Pipes in your Branson Home

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

If you find yourself with a broken pipe and the mess that sometimes comes with it do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson at 417-724-0084.

If you are like most of us, right now you are busy making preparations for the upcoming holidays.  With the hustle and bustle of the season it is easy to forget the extreme weather we are surely to experience soon.  Please remember to adequately prepare your home and property for the harsh winter months ahead, especially your pipes and water systems.

With these huge temperature drops water will freeze, when water freezes, it expands, this can mean trouble for your pipes. If the temperature of your pipes drops below 32 degrees, even for a very short amount of time, it can result in a broken pipe, this can cause water damage to your home. Take the following precautions now to avoid a major catastrophe in your home or property.

  • If your home has a crawlspace close the vents and secure the crawlspace door. For extra precaution stuff insulation around all the openings.
  • Make sure your pipes are well-insulated.
  • Keep your garage door closed, especially if you have bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms in or around the garage walls.
  • If your bathroom pipes run along an outside wall, keep the cabinet doors open to allow heat inside especially during particularly cold spells.
  • Never turn off the heat when you leave home during the winter. Instead, set the temperature to at least 55 degrees F.

Outside Your Home

  • Disconnect and store garden hoses. If your home has a separate shut-off for external faucets, turn it off and drain the water from those faucets.
  • Know where your main waterline shut-off is before a problem arises.

Here are some signs you have frozen pipes.

  • You turn on the faucet but nothing comes out.
  • You turn on the faucet and just a slight trickle comes out.
  • Frost is visible on the pipe.
  • The water is turned off but you hear rushing water. This could be a sign that you have a leak somewhere. You should turn off the main waterline immediately and investigate.

Hopefully these tips will help you prepare your home for the extreme temperature drops we see in the Branson area.  If you find yourself with a broken pipe and the mess that sometimes comes with it do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson at 417-724-0084.  When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial.  A delay of just a few hours can greatly increase the severity of the water damage.  We are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week for water emergencies, large or small.   Our fully trained staff has extensive cleaning and restoration experience to get your property back “like it never even happened”.

Do You Have Storm “Four” Knowledge?

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

Prepare for Storm Damage in Nixa

Throughout life, there are many things you plan for. You try to structure your education so you’ll have a fulfilling and well-paying job. You may plan for a vacation weeks or even months ahead. Maybe you planned for the type of home you wanted, gathering blueprints, getting contractors lined up, choosing color swatches, etc.

But unfortunately, many of us don’t plan for disasters, natural or man-made. When they happen, people may say things like, “But I never saw it coming,” and “We didn’t have time to react.” Well, the time for action is long before a tragedy befalls you or your property!

According to FEMA, there are four main ways to prepare for storms you can and should do NOW:

  1. Get informed
  2. Make a plan
  3. Assemble a kit
  4. Maintain your plan and kit
  1. Get Informed - Many areas have local emergency management offices and/or a Red Cross Chapter. These organizations can provide you vital information concerning local emergency response arrangements, evacuation plans and emergency shelters. It’s also a good idea to invest in a NOAA Weather Radio that will alert you during any time of the day or night for when possible destructive conditions materialize.
  2. Make a Plan
  • Conduct a family meeting that will inform everyone what your emergency plans are.
  • Have an out-of-town contact that each one knows the number to. This is who you’ll call to inform where you are after a disaster strikes.
  • Teach your children how and when to call emergency numbers.
  • Have a prearranged location picked out as the place your family will meet in case you get separated from one another. Make sure everyone knows not only the best escape routes but the safe places to go inside your home if a tornado approaches.
  • Know how and when to turn off water, gas and electricity at the main switches or valves.
  • Have fire extinguishers ready and show everyone where they’re located and how to use them.
  • Inventory your possessions and keep that list along with important documents in a safe deposit box.
  • Keep your homeowners or renter’s insurance company’s telephone numbers readily available. (Also, be sure to keep SERVPRO® of Nixa/Branson's phone number close at hand!)
  1. Assemble a Kit – this is a collection of basic family needs you’ll need after a disaster. These should be stored in a portable container and enough to last you three days. It should include food, water, a battery powered radio, a flashlight, etc. You can find a full list of items for your survival kit at redcross.org.
  2. Maintain Your Plan – every six months, review your plans with your family, conduct evacuation drills and restock expiring food and perishables in your kit. Also, confirm your fire extinguisher is recharged and smoke alarm batteries are replaced.

Alan Lakein, an author on personal time management, once wrote, “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” That’s very empowering when you think about it. It’s almost like time traveling without a DeLorean or having to mess with all that space-time continuum stuff. Planning ahead for emergencies can also bring you great peace of mind. Think of it as an insurance policy against future disasters without the pesky premiums.

This building was adjacent to a warehouse that was completely demolished by fire.  SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson was called and we completed emergency services by extracting and cleaning the flooded floors left behind from the Fire Department when putting out the fire. Our employees worked diligently through the night to extract the water left over from the Fire Department.  The floors were also covered in soot as you can see in the photos,  so we steam cleaned the floors, to keep the rest of the plant from getting cross contaminated with soot.

Fire and smoke damage is especially destructive. Like this situation, in many instances your Branson property will also suffer from water damage from firefighting efforts. We specialize in fire and water damage restoration; it’s the cornerstone of our business. We have specialized equipment, specific training, and certifications that allow us restore your home or business to pre-fire condition.

SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Smoke and Soot Can Cause Pervasive Odor in your Nixa/Branson home.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Nixa/Branson Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

The Top 10 Ways to Avoid Fires

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

A recent garage fire to a Southwest Missouri home

Fires will always happen, but we prefer that you personally never have to experience one! If you do, click here for some after the fire do’s and don’ts while waiting for help to arrive.

Fires devastate homes and businesses and cause damage in numerous ways. Not only is fire destructive, but it also leaves behind lingering and pervasive odors, not to mention extensive water damage that results from the firefighter’s efforts to extinguish the flames. The professionals at SERVPRO® of Nixa/Branson have the specialized training, equipment and experience that will restore your home or place of work to preloss conditions.

To increase the odds that you’ll stay safe, consider these Top 10 causes of fire. Use this information to plan how to make your home or business a safer place:

  1. Cooking: Avoid splattering grease, never leave kitchens unattended and keep flammable materials away from heat sources.
  2. Heating Equipment: Have your furnace checked regularly and keep portable heaters away from combustibles.
  3. Smoking: If you smoke in or near the house, always make sure the cigarette butt is fully put out and make the bedroom off-limits to smoking.
  4. Electricity: Look out for frayed cords, the overuse of extension cords and overloaded outlets, and don’t run electrical wires under rugs or heavy furniture.
  5. Candles: Never leave them unattended and keep them out of the reach of children or pets.
  6. Children: Keep them away from matches and lighters to suppress any curiosity they may have about what happens when different items burn.
  7. Inadequate wiring: It’s often found in older homes and apartments. Have a professional electrician check yours.
  8. Flammable Liquids: Keep fuels, solvents, cleaning agents, thinners, adhesives, and paints away from heat sources.
  9. Holiday Decor: Keep your Christmas tree well-watered and away from heat sources. Check decorative lights for damage and never place candles on or near Christmas trees.
  10. Grills: Keep them away from your home, deck rails, tablecloths and tree limbs. And never use them indoors, including your garage.

SERVPRO® of Nixa/Branson has the knowledge, professional equipment and ability to eliminate all traces of a fire. Besides the easily accessible areas, we also examine wall cavities, duct work, crawl spaces and plumbing chases to establish whether they also suffered any smoke or fire damage. We ensure that all fire damage is cleaned, repaired, or removed and leave your home or business as if it never even happened.

When DIY is Not a Good Idea

9/20/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Southwest Missouri

Many people attempt to save money on the expense of water or mold damage restoration by skipping the process of hiring restoration professionals. Instead, they try to handle the tear-out and dry-out processes themselves. For many “minor” spills (those only involving a few gallons of water at most), this can be fine as long as the spill is cleaned up quickly and occurs well away from walls or other places where the moisture from the spill can reach a gap and seep into the subfloor.

But that kind of DIY is usually NAGI (not a good idea). Whenever there's a major amount of moisture damage, it's very important for a professional restoration service like SERVPRO of Nixa Branson to be brought in to manage the dry-out process. Without the help of a trained and experienced expert, someone who attempts DIY moisture removal may miss pockets of moisture in the building, leading to:

  • Damaged building infrastructure - moisture can seep into the structural materials behind the walls and under the floor, causing damage. But with proper dry-out and moisture remediation, much of the damage can be mitigated or even avoided.
  • Warped flooring - when moisture seeps into subfloor materials, it can cause wooden boards to shift, bend, and cup. This creates an uneven floor and poses a safety risk to the building’s occupants.
  • Mold growth - left unchecked, moisture trapped in a building can promote the growth of mold, particularly in cool, dark places such as basements and in-between walls. As any IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) Specialist can tell you, mold spores in the air pose a serious respiratory risk to children and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

As a general rule of thumb, if the water or mold damage to your home or business is severe enough to warrant an insurance claim, then you shouldn't try to handle the restoration process on your own. Damage that occurs as a result of DIY restoration efforts is typically not covered by insurance, and restoration work can be hazardous for those who haven't been trained for the risks associated with working with dirty water, mold, and water-damaged structures.

As a character of Clint Eastwood once said, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” So, if you don’t have experience making water or mold damage “Like it Never Even Happened”, then give SERVPRO of Nixa Branson a call immediately!

Conditions in Nixa Might Be Right for Mold

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 417-724-0084

What to Do:

  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Nixa/Branson for mold remediation services.

Mold Remediation in Southwest Missouri Home

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

Southwest Missouri kitchen mold remediation.
